Building community on the mat

It’s easy to picture yoga as a solo pursuit — one person, one mat, eyes closed. But look around any class that’s been running for a while and you’ll notice the same faces returning to the same time slot, checking in with each other before class starts, occasionally grabbing coffee after.
Why community keeps people coming back
Motivation fades. Community doesn’t — or at least it fades much more slowly. Students who know they’ll be missed are far more likely to show up on the days they’d otherwise skip. It’s the same reason group training outperforms solo workouts for long-term adherence.
What we do to encourage it
We keep class sizes small enough that instructors learn names, we schedule the same instructor in the same slot so relationships have time to build, and we leave a few minutes before and after class instead of rushing straight from the door to the mat.
If you’ve been practicing alone, try showing up to the same class at the same time for a month. The community tends to build itself.
